Deck Building Strategies 106

In my previous article, I covered the general Sideboard theories. Now, I’d like to cover practical techniques in sideboarding – techniques which many actually use in tournaments. Before going on though, I would like to make it absolutely clear that while I am personally comfortable with these techniques myself, they do require practice and in some cases (which I would be very surprised if so) may not suit them.

Deck Building Strategies 105

Over the weeks, I got some specific requests about what to write for my Deck Building Strategy articles and that topic was on Sideboarding. It is an essential part of the game especially at tournaments but at the same time my concern was would be too difficult for some of the younger readers out there.

However, given that it is a topic that needs to be covered either way and it’s better to start now than later, here it is.

Deck Building Strategies 104

Now that I’ve covered the core theories of how to build a deck, let’s start focusing on the practical side of things – I’m sure some of you are itching to or have already stuck 40 cards together and are ready to duel, the practical side of things can get quite complex and I would like to take this chance to cover in a bit more detail on a topic which I don’t feel I see enough of – Resource Management.

Deck Building Strategies 103

Welcome to the 3rd part of Deck Building Strategies. Unfortunately this series got put a bit off side due to the release of various exciting products in between which I had to cover first. But now, that’s all covered, so I’d like continue where I left off in part 2, with the remaining points on the checklist which I use myself when I am building a deck.

Competitive Edge: Failure to Brew

For a while now I’ve been brewing for Standard. Sticking to an Esper shell, I’ve made several control decks with different win conditions, tried my hand at making Chalice of Life work in an artifact combo deck, and finally have switched to aggro with an illusion/spirit tribal deck. I’m no Conley Woods, so naturally all of my decks have failed miserably. So now I’m going back to control, where I’m most comfortable, examining other Esper control decks in the format and finding one I’d like to play.

Competitive Edge: Casting A Modern Eye

If you don’t know about Modern, it’s the newest non-rotating format introduced by Wizards of the Coast, includes every set from Modern onwards, and is still very, very open for exploration and experimentation.

I don’t play Modern, but I am looking at breaking into the format and starting to compete in Modern events, once I can afford to build a deck. I’ve been following the development of the format and what players are doing, and think I have a pretty good idea of what the format will look like for the upcoming PTQ season.

The Current Meta (November 2011)

I guess it’s been a while since I did an analysis of the current meta – and now is a good timing to do so especially when we have fresh results from the latest Yugioh Championship (YCS) which was held a few days ago. This is also actually the first YCS since the release of Photon Shockwave so hopefully it provides more insight for everyone especially for those who wants to participate in upcoming tournaments in Australia and possibly the World Championships in 2012.

The Current Meta (September 2011)

It’s been a month since the new ban list took place and with major tournament results becoming available, I guess it’s time I actually attempt to do my first and detailed breakdown of what the current meta is in the world of Yugioh.

Just play CawBlade…

On second thought…not *exactly*…
It is a weird time to be one of the vocal people to have banned Stoneforge Mystic and Jace the Mind Sculptor and to yet watch it stay as one of the top dogs for the new metagame. Important proponents like Brian Kibler and Mike Flores have examined why CawBlade refuses to die and what makes a good deck “good” (another article by Paulo Vitor on “good decks” is also a good reference point as well).

Other Advantages

Doctrine – Advantages Part 3: Other Advantages

Welcome to the part 3 of articles on core Yugioh strategy – Other Advantages. In this part we will cover all the other advantages that we have not covered in the previous 2 articles, which are deck, graveyard, removal and tempo advantages. For those who read the previous 2 articles, while these still counts as advantages, they are not influential as the previous ones. However, it doesn’t hurt to know them as under certain situations it will become useful and having access to more knowledge contributes to improvements to your skill. Again, if you are not sure after reading it over a few times, simply ask via the comment box at the bottom of the article.
