Deck Building Strategies 106

In my previous article, I covered the general Sideboard theories. Now, I’d like to cover practical techniques in sideboarding – techniques which many actually use in tournaments. Before going on though, I would like to make it absolutely clear that while I am personally comfortable with these techniques myself, they do require practice and in some cases (which I would be very surprised if so) may not suit them.

Deck Building Strategies 105

Over the weeks, I got some specific requests about what to write for my Deck Building Strategy articles and that topic was on Sideboarding. It is an essential part of the game especially at tournaments but at the same time my concern was would be too difficult for some of the younger readers out there.

However, given that it is a topic that needs to be covered either way and it’s better to start now than later, here it is.

Competitive Edge: Failure to Brew

For a while now I’ve been brewing for Standard. Sticking to an Esper shell, I’ve made several control decks with different win conditions, tried my hand at making Chalice of Life work in an artifact combo deck, and finally have switched to aggro with an illusion/spirit tribal deck. I’m no Conley Woods, so naturally all of my decks have failed miserably. So now I’m going back to control, where I’m most comfortable, examining other Esper control decks in the format and finding one I’d like to play.

The Current Meta (September 2011)

It’s been a month since the new ban list took place and with major tournament results becoming available, I guess it’s time I actually attempt to do my first and detailed breakdown of what the current meta is in the world of Yugioh.

Just play CawBlade…

On second thought…not *exactly*…
It is a weird time to be one of the vocal people to have banned Stoneforge Mystic and Jace the Mind Sculptor and to yet watch it stay as one of the top dogs for the new metagame. Important proponents like Brian Kibler and Mike Flores have examined why CawBlade refuses to die and what makes a good deck “good” (another article by Paulo Vitor on “good decks” is also a good reference point as well).

September Limited and Forbidden List

As most of you might be aware, the September Limited and Forbidden List has now been officially announced a few days ago for both OCG and TCG formats. Although both formats generally have the same lists, I have been refraining from mentioning anything about it until the official list for TCG has been released – since there are several differences which (you never know) might be given exceptions but thankfully, this hasn’t been the case.

The Standard Metagame: A Madman’s Scattered Thoughts and Angry Ramblings

The recent banning of both Jace, the Mind Sculptor and Stoneforge Mystic in Standard have breathed new life into the format. We have a metagame now! Which is, like, totally cool and stuff. But what exactly is the meta? What does the format look like?

There’s been much buzz about Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas and Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle decks ruling the format, but it’s actually quite a bit more vibrant than that. With the bannings and M12 about to be released, the format has been blown right open as if there’s been a rotation (well, really, there kinda has been.) Here are the decks that should be in the format, or will be given time, starting with…

Basic Staples of Yugioh

Yugioh Staples

Before I start, let me explain what “staple” means. Staple is a term commonly used to describe cards which are “a must have” in almost any type of decks, unless you have very good reason not to use them. The term “staple” does have a very broad definition but every time I go to Battlecraft, I often see questionable moments where some people don’t have certain cards in their deck (even though they have a copy of it in their spare cards) for the weirdest reasons – which unfortunately makes no sense, and frankly, are preventing them from winning games which they should be winning.

Duelist Pack: Crow “Card to Watch”

Whether you like it or hate it, there is one thing we all agree on – Blackwing is popular and strong.

Ever since their first debut under Crimson Crisis, Blackwings have been receiving constant support, enough to push them into a popular theme and appearing regularly amongst top decks across various tournaments. So popular they have been reprinted numerous times, and now, they come as a form of Duelist Pack where you are guaranteed to get Blackwings and Blackwings only.

Principles for Magic deck building

Here are 5 principles for deck building. This is not an exhaustive list.

1) Use efficient cards
2) Get around costs
3) Use synergy
4) Metagaming
5) Make consistent decks

This article will focus on the first 4 principles listed above. The 5th principle which we have already discussed here.
